Pets can carry MRSA virus

Reuters reports that a German research team has discovered that the family cat can also be the carrier of the MRSA or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus virus.

The researchers found that that only after they had successfully treated the family cat did the women's infection clear.  Apparently it is also known that dogs can be carriers as well and now people should be more aware of the issue related to the family pet.

In this particular case it was unclear whether the virus was passed to the cat or from the cat although the strain the woman picked up was said to be rare in humans.  Regardless she had the strain so it is still questionable if she became infected from the cat.

We are glad further research is underway in this area and we would like to see more studies that confirm the transmission of the virus either from or to humans from cats.  As we find more information we will keep you updated here on BarkleyAndPaws
