What Is A Rescue Group?
A group of individuals dedicated to bettering the lives of animals. They give dogs second chances. They find new responsible owners and loving homes. These are usually dedicated individuals. They have to be because they are not being paid.
There is no financial reward for these volunteers. This is not their job and they do it out of their own good will and their love for the dogs.
Within the average rescue group, individuals perform different jobs. Some are in charge of retrieving the dogs from whatever source. Other members act as foster homes. They take over the care and socialization of the animals. They work to ensure the dog is physically and mentally rehabilitated. Not all dogs are in rough shape. The foster home is prepared to handle with and nurture all kinds.
Rescue members act as transports. They arrange care and tend to the transfer of the animals. They drive the dogs between foster homes and often drop off the pets at their new homes. They coordinate between the other volunteers and mobilize their operations.
Dog Rescues
Rescue groups most often focus on one breed of dog. Some rescues are dedicated to a purebred and other only accepts mixed breeds.
There are also rescue organizations that combine purebred breeds. They may save Pit Bulls and Bulldogs. Other groups will save a purebred and its related mixes. In other words, they rescue a specific purebred and any mixed breeds or crosses. They would take in boxers and boxer crosses.
Adopting Through Dog Rescues
Adopting from a rescue group takes longer than other adoption agencies. You must jump through extra hoops and really be dedicated to the breed. Rescue groups go through a lot of trouble in order to rescue neglected dogs and do not want to have to rescue them again. They will ask to see your house and grill you about your interest in the dog.
They have had at least 1 home before. Rescue groups want to make sure that this time the home sticks. They want the dog to have a lasting relationship with their new person.
How To Find Them
Rescue groups are easy to find. Search the web and you can find many in your area. Phone books my have some listings. Most easily you can talk to your vet and they will have plenty of numbers for you to call. Animal shelters also have a listing of rescue groups because they often pick up certain breeds from the shelter.
