Reversing genetic predisposition in dogs

Impossible you say? There are a few important things to know about genetic predisposition among dogs. Dogs once lived long, happy and healthy lives. The tremendous decline in health we see today happened over the last 40+ years; approximately 80 generations of dogs.

In order to consider the possibility of reversing genetic predisposition we first have to examine what has changed. What was their habitat like then, compared to today? How much of the past can we incorporate into the present, and if we do, can it really reverse today’s slippery slope of genetic predisposition?

I can imagine the look on many faces reading this. Nevertheless, it is a lot like telling your grandchildren that when you were a child there was no color television, let alone High Def, or that we only had 3 channels and that the programming ended at midnight and did not come back on until 6 AM.

Genetic disease is not inherent; it was bred in, though not intentionally.

You can domestic dogs’ behavior, but what about their diet…

Going back at least thousands of years, dogs were trained to hunt, herd and protect.  They lived outdoors, got plenty of exercise and drank chemical-free water. They hunted their own food. If they were fed, it was healthy bits of raw meat and bones from freshly slaughtered animals.

The popularity of feeding your dog commercial dog food came about as a result of a well designed marketing campaign. The money spent by early adapters was poured back into advertising. It’s hard to remember a time when you didn’t see advertisements for dog food in every form of media.

Unfortunately, this convenience had a dark side. Commercial dog foods have little in common with your dogs’ natural diet; instead, it is mostly comprised of empty grain-based calories, and meat that is not fit for human consumption. You wouldn’t eat it if you were starving, and yet you feed it to your dog every day!

Cheap Food is Expensive

Without proper nutrition, health declines. A myriad of dog diseases are directly linked to poor food choices.

Over decades of urban domestication (and multi-generations), certain breeds began to manifest certain diseases more than others did. Each subsequent generation became more influenced by those diseases, until they became a predisposition within the breed.

Good News

If your dog suffers from a genetic condition, all-natural products are available to minimize the toll. Why all-natural, and not medication?  Medication deals with symptoms, not causes. Their main purpose is to make symptoms disappear, by driving them from view. This approach is neither a cure, nor does it address the actual cause. When medication is administered long-term, the natural defense system atrophies; this relegates your dog to a lifetime of toxic medication. This is tough on the dog’s health, and life expectancy and tough on your wallet.

Think of all-natural remedies as super foods formulated specifically to target the causes and provide the nutrients needed to restore and reenergize that particular systems’ function , so it can once again go about its’ business of protecting your dog. The sooner all-natural remedies are administered, the greater the chances of restoring your dogs’ natural defense systems.

No matter the predisposition, if it was bred in, it can be bred out.

This is accomplished by first understanding the physiology and chemistry involved, then providing your breed dogs with nutrients and supplements that are specifically formulated to offset the predisposition.

Let’s use hip displasya as an example: By providing a steady supply of nutrients that are scientifically proven to nourish the joints you can minimize the pain , BUT what if you administered these nutrients from the time your dog was weaned?

The chances of full-blown hip displasya are minimized. Now, if you repeat this program for each subsequent generation…

Breeding Genetic Predisposition Out

Unfortunately, proving that genetic predisposition can be bred out of a line of purebred dogs would probably take a minimum of four to five generations. I hope that someone reading this article knows such a dedicated breeder and will pass it on.

You begin by transitioning the dogs to a nutritionally balanced diet consisting primarily of raw meats and incorporating several Vitality Science supplements daily.

It stands to reason that if breeders incorporate such a program with pups that are intended to become breeding stock, that the first generation will be less predisposed to genetic conditions, assuming they are supplemented from the time they are weaned. Within four to five generations, the predisposition could be mostly, if not completely, bred out!

Even if the disease does not become completely eradicated, doesn't it make perfect sense that the improvements in overall health would help the dog better deal with the effects of genetic predisposition?
