The Golden Retriever: Golden Traits, Golden Expectations

Imagine a dog that prides an inherent capacious brain that can learn as much as 240 commands, words, and phrases altogether. Naturally, you will expect a breed, with such ability, to come with an over-strung, high maintenance, and overly exuberant temperament but then I am talking about the Golden Retriever. This creature undoubtedly is endowed with such high intellect but at the same time he is proven and well known around the world to own an obedient nature and a highly-trainable eagerness.

Golden Retrievers are wonderfully coated in medium-length dense hair but their outer layer is surprisingly water-repellent. Their frame is bold and well-balanced, and they gleam in hues of cream to golden but never of red. The ears, dense with sparkly long hairs, hang pendulously and flap with every playful stride while the tail is proudly long and never curled.

Historically, Golden Retrievers were bred alongside the modernization of guns. Hunting, being a prevalent game even then, became faster, accurate, and shot at farther distances- all these are due to the modernization of the hunting guns. To recover shot waterfowl at such distances and at waters most times, the need for a new breed that can qualify for needs aroused.

The facts are not clear but there are written evidence which states the Golden Retriever as a descendant of the cross between the yellow-colored Retriever and Tweed Water Spaniel. As an important companion in hunting, this particular dog was specifically developed to have a soft mouth- to avoid damaging the game- and an innate love for water- for those swimming needs. The outcome is the now well-known and well-loved Golden Retriever which, even to this day is an excellent hunting companion and a great family pet.

In current times, the Golden Retriever is one of the breeds that top the list of the world's premium family companion dogs. This dog has an inordinate desire to please those who surround him and it has an infinite capacity to love, care, and learn. Because of these traits, its services are not only enjoyed by families, but of the blind, too, as a guide, therapy dog, and of the disabled as a service dog.

This dog is golden in all sense of the word because of its astounding genuine kindness, amiability, and confidence. He is unbiased in affection, obedience, and trust to both strangers and familiar faces. Their sweet-tempered disposition, however, won't apply as guard dogs for their unsuspecting spirits won't ever put up a fight.

This wonderful animal has a strong desire to please the owner and so training them for obedience is an extraordinarily happy and pleasing moment each time. Aside from being an excellent swimmer and retriever, the Golden is also the champion when it comes to obedience competitions. Because of its supreme intellectual ability, it is trained to do fun tasks such as tricks performing and competitive obedience, and serious jobs such as narcotics detection and tracking.

Teaching the Golden Retriever is much less of a problem. All it needs for it to be fulfilled is a display of credible leadership from its master. Be an impervious, placid, solid, and consistent pack leader to him and any behavioral problems will less likely strike him.
